Wehner Lifts Shepherd Women Past Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Freshman guard Kara Wehner (Staten Island, NY/Xaverian) hit a buzzer-beater in the lane to lift Shepherd University (3-5, 1-2 PSAC) to a 60-58 win over Slippery Rock (0-6, 0-3 PSAC) in PSAC women's basketball action at Slippery Rock on Monday afternoon. 

Freshman forward Carmaya Bowman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) led the Rams with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to record her first career double-double. Bowman connected on 7-of- 9 field goals. Her 11 rebounds were a career-high effort. 

Wehner added 12 points and tied Slippery Rock's Emily Venick with a game-high four assists. She connected on 5-of-8 shots from the floor with a 2-of-3 effort from three-point range. She added three steals and three rebounds. 

Graduate student forward Cara Minor (Hundred, W.Va./North Marion) tossed in nine points, while sophomore guard Peyton Grant (Plymouth, Maine/Dexter Regional) added eight. Junior guard/forward Sydney Bolles (Elkview, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) grabbed a team-high six rebounds. 

Regan Atkins scored a game-high 18 points for Slippery Rock. Kristina Donza added 13 points and Endya Robinson tossed in 12.

Shepherd had a 39-35 advantage at halftime. 

Shepherd trailed 58-53 after Gabby Jackson hit a three-pointer for Slippery Rock with 2:47 left in regulation. Grant drained a three with 2:20 remaining to cut the lead to 58-56. Wehner drove for a layup with 45 seconds left to set the stage for her game-winner. 

Shepherd shot 43.1 percent (25-58) from the floor with a 42.9 percent (6-14) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 66.7 percent (4-6 ) of their free throws. 

Slippery Rock shot 41.8 percent (23-55) from the floor with a 20 percent (4-20) effort from three-point range. The Rock shot 72.7 percent (8-11) from the foul line. 

Shepherd had a 37-30 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced 17 turnovers and committed 21. 

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Edinboro for a 1 p.m. contest.
