Shepherd Men Fall to Cal

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – KJ McClurg scored a game-high 20 points to lead California (Pa.) (6-0, 2-0 PSAC) to a 73-70 win over Shepherd (3-4, 0-2 PSAC) in PSAC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday afternoon. 

Senior guard Daniel McClain-Corley (Clinton, Md./Massanutten Military Academy) and sophomore forward Stefan Marcelle (Washington, D.C./Georgetown Prep) each scored 14 points to lead the Rams. Marcelle also added eight rebounds and a pair of steals. 

Senior guard Phillip Jordan (Rockville, Md./St. Albans) and freshman guard Marcus Banks (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) each had 12 points. Banks also had eight boards and a game-high five assists.                          

Jermaine Hall, Jr. added 18 points and six rebounds for the Vulcans. Antoine Arnett had 13 points, while Zyan Collins tossed in 10. 

The Vulcans had a 40-32 advantage at halftime. 

Cal never trailed in the contest. The Vulcans led by as many as 12 points in the second half but Shepherd rallied to within three points at 69-66 after a pair of free throws by McClain-Corley with 27 seconds remaining. Cal closed the game on a 4-4 run to gain the win.

Shepherd connected on 42 percent (29-69) of its field goals with a 23.1 percent (6-26) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 100 percent (6-6) of their free throws. 

Cal shot 50 percent (25-50) from the floor with a 47.1 percent (8-17) effort from beyond the arc. The Vulcans hit 71.4 percent (15-21) of their free throws.

Shepherd had a 35-33 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 15 turnovers and committed 10. 

The Rams return to action on Dec. 18 when they travel to Slippery Rock for a 5 p.m. game.
