SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Former Ram Jordan Smith scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead 10th-ranked California (Pa.) (6-1, 2-0 PSAC) to a 64-63 win over Shepherd University (1-5, 0-2 PSAC) in PSAC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday
Graduate student forward Cara Minor (Hundred, W.Va./North Marion) scored a season-high 14 points to lead the Rams. Minor hit on 5-of-10 field goals with a 1-of-5 effort from three-point range.
Junior guard Leila Copeland (Reston, Va./South Lakes/Barton) added 11 points and four assists, while freshman guard Kara Wehner (Staten Island, NY/Xaverian) had 10 points and five rebounds. Freshman forward Carmaya Bowman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) also tossed in 10 points.
Allycia Harris added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Vulcans.
Cal had a 39-34 lead at halftime behind 16 first-half points from Smith.
Shepherd rallied from a five-point deficit in the fourth quarter and held a 63-60 advantage after a jumper by junior guard/forward Sydney Bolles (Elkview, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) with 1:40 left. Harris got a layup with 1:25 remaining and Iyahnna Williams scored the game-winner on a jumper with 55 seconds left.
Shepherd shot 50 percent (23-46) from the floor with a 42.9 percent (6-14) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 84.6 percent (11-13) of their free throws.
Cal shot 39 percent (23-59) from the floor with a 27.8 percent (5-18) effort from three-point range. The Vulcans shot 61.9 percent (13-21) from the foul line.
Cal had a 36-27 edge on the boards. The Rams forced 16 turnovers and committed 19.
The Rams return to action on Dec. 12 when they host Cheyney for a 1 p.m. contest.
