Shepherd Women Fall to Mercyhurst

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Lauren Klare scored a game-high 18 points to lead Mercyhurst (9-2, 5-0 PSAC) to a 70-55 win over Shepherd University (3-7, 1-4 PSAC) in PSAC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday. 

Junior guard Deaira Hairston (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) led the Rams with a career-high 15 points. She connected on 3-of-9 field goals with a 9-of-14 effort from the foul line. She added six rebounds and three assists. 

Junior guard/forward Sydney Bolles (Elkview, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) added 11 points and five boards, while sophomore guard Peyton Grant (Plymouth, Maine/Dexter Regional) tossed in nine points. Freshman guard Kara Wehner (Staten Island, NY/Xaverian) had eight points and five assists, while freshman forward Carmaya Bowman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. 

Julie Buchman scored 15 points, while Bailey Kuhns added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Lakers. 

The game was tied 25-all at halftime. 

Mercyhurst outscored Shepherd, 26-12, in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Shepherd shot 32.1 percent (18-56) from the floor with a 35.7 percent (5-14) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 70 percent (14-20) of their free throws. 

Mercyhurst shot 42.6 percent (23-54) from the floor with a 42.9 percent (9-21) effort from three-point range. The Lakers shot 60 percent (15-25) from the foul line. 

Mercyhurst had a 43-35 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 18 turnovers and committed 17. 

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Indiana (Pa.) for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
