EMORY, Va. -- Shepherd University split a doubleheader in softball action to open the season at Emory & Henry on Friday. The Rams (1-1) recorded a 4-0 win in game one and dropped a 2-0 decision to the Wasps (3-6) in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in game one in the fifth inning on a three-run blast off the bat of graduate student third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville).
The Rams added a run in the sixth when senior outfielder Kylie Condon (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) singled and later scored on a double by freshman first baseman Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora).
Junior pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 5 K, 2 BB) (1-0) earned the win. Abigail Street (7.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Wasps.
Emory and Henry gained the split with a 2-0 win in the nightcap.
The Wasps took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Mackenzie Williams led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Rachel Hill.
Emory & Henry added a run in the fifth as Kylie Cundiff singled and later scored on a double by Street.
Williams, Street, and Delany Buchanan each had a pair of hits for the Wasps.
Junior outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Avery Adkins (7.0 IP, 4 H, 6 K, 0 BB) (2-3) gained the win. Senior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (6.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 3 k, 1BB) (0-1) took the loss for the Rams.
Doubleheader action slated for Saturday at King (Tenn.) has been postponed until Sunday at 1 p.m. due to weather concerns. Action scheduled for Sunday at Tusculum has been cancelled.
