LEESBURG, Fla. -- Shepherd University (9-3) gained a pair of wins in softball action at The Spring Games on Saturday. The Rams gained a 5-4 win in the early game against Minnesota Crookston (7-12) and added a 2-1 victory over Southern Connecticut State (0-4) in the later contest. Shepherd ran its win streak to eight games.
Minnesota Crookston took advantage of five walks and a hit-by-pitch to take a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Shepherd answered back with three runs in the second. Senior catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central) and sophomore infielder Lexi Clatterbuck (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) each had RBI-doubles, while junior second baseman Caitlin Donnelly (Newark, Del./Padua Academy) added an RBI-single.
Shepherd rallied for the win in the fifth on a two-run triple by senior outfielder Kylie Condon (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington).
Graduate student third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville), senior outfielder Hannah Beeler (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim), and Beeler each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
Junior pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (6.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 6 K, 1 BB) (4-0) earned the win for the Rams. Thayda Houser (5.0 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) (3-1) took the loss for Minnesota Crookston.
The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the fourth as Clatterbuck led off with a single and later scored on a triple off the bat of senior outfielder Kylie Condon (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington).
Southern Connecticut State scored its lone run in the seventh as Katrina Roy singled and later scored on a single by Jacqueline Dumont.
Freshman catcher Camdyn Noland (Summit Point, W.Va./Washington) went 2-for-2 to pace the Rams.
Senior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (7.0 IP, 2 H, 1 UER, 4 K, 0 BB) (2-2) earned the win. Jessica Perucki (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (0-2) took the loss for the Owls.
The Rams return to action on Monday when they face New Haven at 11:30 a.m. and Alliance at 2 p.m.
