Shepherd Baseball Rallies Past Bloomsburg

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (14-7, 4-2 PSAC East) rallied past Bloomsburg (7-10, 2-5 PSAC East) for a 14-12 victory in PSAC East baseball action at Fairfax Field on Thursday. 

After scoring a run in the second inning, Bloomsburg added six more in the third with a two-run triple by Carter Chasanov keying the rally. 

Shepherd scored a pair in the fourth as graduate student third baseman Connor Dewees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) reach on an error, and sophomore outfielder Mike Guzzardo (Mullica Hill, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep/RCSJ Cumberland) followed with a double. Dewees scored on a ground out by graduate student catcher/ Zach Doss (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Maryland).  Guzzardo later scored on a sacrifice fly by senior infielder Ryan Haddaway (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville). 

Shepherd scored five runs on five hits in the sixth to cut the lead to 8-7. A two-run double off the bat of senior shortstop Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) keyed the rally. 

Bloomsburg scored a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Eli Riley to take a 9-7 lead. 

Shepherd responded with seven runs on six hits in the seventh to take a 14-9 advantage. Redshirt-sophomore outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC) belted a three-run homer, Daugherty added a two-run single, and Dewees hit a solo blast to highlight the rally. 

Bloomsburg added a run in the eighth on a solo homer by Brandon Ernst and two more in the ninth on a two-run homer by Jonathan LaBarbera. 

Guzzardo went 4-for-5 and senior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb) added a 3-for-4 effort to pace a 15-hit attack for the Rams. 

LaBarbera had three hits and drove in three runs for the Huskies. 

Freshman infielder/pitcher Brayden Stottlemeyer (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (2.0 IP, 0 H, 1 UER, 2 K, 2 BB) (1-0) earned the win. Matt Vernieri (1.0 IP, 6 H, 7 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (1-1) took the loss. 

The two teams return to action on Friday for a noon doubleheader at Bloomsburg.
