Shepherd Softball Splits with Lock Haven

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  -- Shepherd University (27-21, 10-18 PSAC East) split with Lock Haven (24-22, 14-16 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Sunday. Lock Haven posted a 6-4 win in game one while Shepherd gained the split with a 9-2 triumph in the nightcap.  

Lock Haven took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one on an RBI-single by Rianna Trexler. 

Bella Schmitt added an RBI-single for the Bald Eagles in the third to up the lead to 2-0. 

Sophomore first baseman Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Trevecca Nazarene) belted a three-run homer in the fourth to give the Rams a 3-2 lead. 

Lock Haven scored three in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Riley McClellan hit a two-run homer to highlight the rally. 

The Bald Eagles added a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Haley Lestician. 

Shepherd got a run in the seventh as graduate student third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) walked and later scored on a single by junior second baseman Caitlin Donnelly (Newark, Del./Padua Academy). 

McClellan went 3-for-4 to lead the Bald Eagles. 

Donnelly and Moore each had a pair of hits for the Rams. 

Kinley Gioglio (4.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (6-1) gained the win. Junior pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (6.0 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 4 K, 4 BB) (9-4) took the loss. 

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the third in the nightcap. Senior outfielder Kylie Condon (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) doubled and later scored on a triple off the bat of junior outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville). Forte scored on a single by sophomore shortstop Lexi Clatterbuck (Front Royal, Va./Skyline). 

The Rams added four runs in the fourth with a three-run homer by Purtell fueling the rally. 

Shepherd added a run in the fifth on a solo blast by Condon. 

Lock Haven scored a pair of runs in the sixth as Schmitt had an RBI-double and later scored on a wild pitch. 

The Rams completed the scoring in the sixth with a two-run homer from Forte. 

Forte went 3-for-4 to pace a 10-hit attack for the Rams 

Freshman pitcher Abby McBride (Northeast, Md./Rising Sun) (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 5 BB) (6-5) earned the complete game win for the Rams. Jada Schellhammer (2.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 K, 6 BB) (7-9) took the loss. 

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Millersville for a 4 p.m. doubleheader. 

Notes: Nicole Purtell scored a pair of runs on the day to give her 52 for the season … she broke the Shepherd single-season mark of 51 set by Courtney Clemons in 2017.
