Shepherd Softball Splits with Millersville; Purtell Sets Doubles Mark

MILLERSVILLE, Pa.  -- Shepherd University (28-22, 11-19 PSAC East) split with Millersville (24-26, 11-17 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action at Millersville on Tuesday. The Rams posted a 9-6 win in game one while Millersville rallied for an 8-7 triumph in the nightcap. Graduate student third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) doubled in the nightcap for her 19th double of the season to break the Shepherd single-season mark of 18 that was shared by Mia Zappacosta (2007) and Rae Johnson (2008). 

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one as Purtell walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior outfielder Hannah Beeler (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim).               

Sophomore shortstop Lexi Clatterbuck (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) led off the second with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Purtell to give the Rams a 2-0 advantage. 

Millersville cut the lead to 2-1 in the second on a solo homer by Gabi Turner. 

Senior outfielder Kylie Condon (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) hit a solo blast in the third to give the Rams a 3-1 lead. 

Millersville answered back in the bottom of the third with three runs on five hits to take a 4-3 advantage. 

Shepherd retook the lead in the fourth. Sophomore first baseman Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Trevecca Nazarene) hit a sacrifice fly, Purtell had an RBI-single, and junior second baseman Caitlin Donnelly (Newark, Del./Padua Academy) added an RBI-double to give the Rams a 6-4 advantage.  

The Marauders got an RBI-double for Aleese Angelo in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 6-5. 

Condon smacked a three-run homer in the seventh to up the Shepherd lead to 9-5 before Turner had an RBI-single for the Marauders in the bottom of the frame to complete the scoring. 

Clatterbuck went 3-for-4 and Condon added a pair of hits to pace the Rams. 

Turner went 3-for-4 for the Marauders. 

Senior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (11-9) gained the win in relief. Alex Schaefer (6.0 IP, 8 H, 9 R, 5 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) (15-13) took the loss. 

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first in the nightcap on a two-run triple by Beeler. 

Freshman catcher Camdyn Noland (Summit Point, W.Va./Washington) singled and later scored on an error to give the Rams a 3-0 lead.  

The Rams added a run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Beeler. 

Millersville scored four runs on three hits in the third to tie the game at 4-4. 

The Rams added RBI-singles from Clatterbuck and Condon in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. 

Millersville cut the lead to 6-5 in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-double from Angelo. 

The Rams added a run in the sixth as Donnelly walked and later scored on a single by Clatterbuck. 

The Marauders got two runs on two hits and two errors in the sixth to tie the game. 

Taylor Campagna led off the seventh with a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Bryn Spoerl. Spoerl scored the game-winning run on a single by Lacey O'Donnell. 

Clatterbuck and Condon each went 3-for-4 to lead the Rams.  

O'Donnell went 4-for-5 to lead the Marauders. 

Morgan Crutcher (7.0 IP, 11 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (6-11) earned the win. Freshman pitcher Abby McBride (Northeast, Md./Rising Sun) (3.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (6-6) took the loss. 

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Chester for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
