SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University (23-11, 6-8 PSAC East) swept a pair of games with Millersville (18-16, 7-7 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Friday. Shepherd posted a 9-1 win in five innings in game one and added an 8-4 triumph in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the second inning in game one on a solo homer by senior outfielder Kylie Condon (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington).
Millersville tied the game in the third as Lacey O'Donnell walked and later scored when she stole home on a double steal.
Shepherd scored eight runs in the third with Condon, sophomore first baseman Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Trevecca Nazarene), and junior second baseman Caitlin Donnelly (Newark, Del./Padua Academy) each smacking two-run singles to key the rally.
Moore went 3-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Junior pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 4 BB) (8-1) gained the victory. Alex Schaefer (2.1 IP, 8 H, 8 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (14-7) took the loss.
Millersville took a 2-0 lead in the first as Aleese Angelo and Gabby D'Ottavio each drove in a run.
The Marauders added a run in the third as Sam Fried doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by D'Ottavio.
Shepherd tied the game in the fourth as senior outfielder Hannah Beeler (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) reached on an error, moved to third on a double by Condon, and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville). Condon later scored on a two-run homer by Moore.
Angelo hit a solo homer in the fifth to give Millersville a 4-3 lead.
Shepherd scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the win. Senior catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central) belted a solo homer and senior first baseman Cameron Davis (Ayden, N.C./South Central/UNC Pembroke) and Forte each had RBI-singles to spark the scoring.
Beeler had a 3-for-4 outing to pace the Rams.
Senior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (7.0 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) (8-5) picked up the win. Morgan Crutcher (4.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (3-7) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host West Chester for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
