Shepherd Softball Falls Twice to West Chester

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Shepherd University (23-13, 6-10 PSAC East) dropped a pair of games with West Chester (25-12, 13-3 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Saturday. Shepherd dropped a 3-0 decision in game one and fell short in a 5-4 contest in the nightcap. 

West Chester took a 2-0 lead in the third in game one behind an RBI-triple from Hailey Melvin and a RBI-single from Grace Aguilar. 

The Golden Rams added a run in the seventh on an RBI-single from Madison Melvin. 

Madison Melvin went 2-for-3 to pace the Golden Rams. 

Junior outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) led the Rams with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. 

Danielle Ciliberto (7.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 3 K, 1 BB) 10-2) gained the win. Freshman pitcher Abby McBride (Northeast, Md./Rising Sun) (7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (5-4) took the loss for the Rams. 

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the first in the nightcap on a two-run homer off the bat of graduate student third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville). 

West Chester cut the lead to 2-1 in the second behind an RBI-single from Abigail Quinn. 

West Chester tied the game in the fourth as Katelyn Rittenbaugh reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch. 

The Rams took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run single by senior catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central). 

West Chester tied the game on a two-run inside-the-park homer by Aguilar in the fifth. 

Olivia Mock hit a solo homer in the sixth to give West Chester the sweep. 

Makenzie Edwards (6.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 3 BB) (4-5) picked up the win. Senior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 0 BB) (8-6) took the loss. 

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Shippensburg for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
