SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (25-20, 8-15 PSAC East) split a doubleheader with Lock Haven (34-6, 16-2 PSAC East) in PSAC East baseball action on Senior Day at Fairfax Field on Tuesday. Shepherd gained a 2-1 win in game one, while Lock Haven posted a 5-2 win in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the third inning in game one as senior infielder Cole Daugherty (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) doubled, stole third base, and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore designated hitter Wyatt Miles (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove/Frederick CC).
Lock Haven tied the game in the fourth on a solo blast by Brendan Jordan.
Miles scored the game-winner in the sixth as he walked and later scored on a double by senior first baseman Ross Mulhall (Morgantown, W.Va./University/Gardner-Webb).
Redshirt-sophomore pitcher Trevor Sharp (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) (7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 9 K, 4 BB) (4-3) gained the complete game win. Kevin Worek (6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 7 K, 3 BB) (6-4) took the loss.
The Bald Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the second in the nightcap behind RBI-singles from Gabe Stirr and Gavin Troutman.
Lock Haven add two more runs in the third on an RBI-single by Jordan and a sacrifice fly from Zach Kaatz.
Kaatz added a homer in the fifth to give the Bald Eagles a 5-0 lead.
The Rams got a run in the seventh as Daugherty led off with a double and scored on a double by Mulhall.
Shepherd added a run in the ninth as Daugherty doubled and later scored on a single by redshirt-sophomore outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC).
Daugherty had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
Troutman went 3-for-5 for the Bald Eagles.
Aeden Walter (9.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 9 K, 0 BB) (5-3) picked up the win. Senior pitcher Nate Hodgkinson (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) (2.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (2-2) took the loss for the Rams.
The contest slated for Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Lock Haven has been canceled due to unplayable field conditions.
