Shepherd Football Holds Off Shippensburg

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –  Junior quarterback Seth Morgan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon/VMI) completed 22-of-31 passes for 254 yards and a pair of scores to lead Shepherd (4-1, 1-1 PSAC East) to a 30-23 win over  Shippensburg (1-4, 1-1 PSAC East) in football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.  

Shippensburg took a 3-0 lead when Jaxson Montross connected on a 45-yard field goal with 5:53 remaining in the first quarter. 

Shepherd took a 7-3 lead when sophomore running back Nazhir Russell (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken)  scored on a four-yard run with no time left in the first quarter. Sophomore kicker James Bozek (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) added the extra point. 

Shepherd added a safety at the 13:26 mark of the second quarter when redshirt-freshman defensive back Muhjahid Johnson (Germantown, Md./Northwest) blocked a punt out of the end zone to take a 9-3 advantage. 

Morgan teamed with sophomore wide receiver Cameron Dorner (New Market, Md./Oakdale) on a six-yard scoring pass with 43 seconds left in the half to increase the lead to 16-3.

Montross added a 43-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to cut the lead to 16-6 at the break. 

Sam Stoner scored on a 12-yard run for Shippensburg with 9:03 left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 16-13. 

Redshirt-junior running back Malakai Brown (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) rambled 43 yards for a score with 1:46 left in the third quarter to give Shepherd a 23-13 lead.

Montross connected on a 40-yard field goal with 13:27 left in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 23-16.  

Morgan fired a 30-yard scoring strike to junior wide receiver Barry Hill (Highland Springs, Va./Varina/West Virginia State) with 5:38 left in the game.

Stoner scored on a five-yard run with 14 seconds left to complete the scoring. 

Shepherd totaled 354 yards of total offense while Shippensburg had 320.  

Stoner connected on 19-of-35 for 272 yards for the Raiders. 

Brown had 16 carries for a game-high 87 yards for the Rams. Tanner Hess had 16 carries for 43 yards for the Raiders. 

Hill had six receptions for 72 yards to lead the Shepherd receivers. Jaimen Bryant had five catches for 92 yards and Redd Douglas added six grabs for 90 yards for the Raiders. 

Sophomore defensive back Donte Harrison (Washington, D.C./Archbishop Carroll led the Rams with a game-high eight tackles (all solos). Redshirt junior defensive lineman Matt Bednarski (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) and junior defensive lineman Jack Baxter (Sykesville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) each contributed a pair of sacks. Dechaune Jackson led the Raiders with nine tackles (seven solos), a forced fumble, and a pass breakup. 

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Lock Haven for a 1 p.m. game.
