Strong Second Half Lifts Shepherd Men Past Mansfield

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Senior guard Daniel McClain-Corley (Clinton, Md./Massanutten Military Academy) scored a game-high 24 points to lead Shepherd (6-8, 3-6 PSAC) to a 71-53 win over Mansfield (5-8, 3-5 PSAC) in PSAC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday. 

McClain-Corley connected on 10-of-16 field goals with a 2-of-5 effort from beyond the arc. He was 2-of-4 from the foul line. He added six rebounds. 

Freshman guard Michael Cooper (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) scored a career-high 15 points. Senior guard Phillip Jordan (Rockville, Md./St. Albans) added eight points, a career-high nine rebounds, and six assists. Freshman guard Marcus Banks (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) added six points, six boards, and five assists. 

Sophomore guard Brendan Doleman (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman) scored his first points of the season when he drained a corner three-pointer much to the delight of the Shepherd fans. 

Michael Dickson led the Mountaineers with 14 points and eight rebounds. Saraj Ali added 11 points. 

Shepherd had a 32-31 lead at halftime behind 13 first-half points from McClain-Corley. 

The Rams used a 14-0 run midway through the second half to take an 18-point lead at 63-45 after a layup by Cooper with 6:33 left. 

Shepherd connected on 49.1 percent (27-55) of its field goals with a 47.8 percent (11-23) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 75 percent (6-8) of their free throws. 

Mansfield shot 37.5 percent (21-56) from the floor with a 22.2 percent (4-18) effort from beyond the arc. The Mountaineers hit 77.8 percent (7-9) from the foul line. 

Shepherd had a 37-28 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced nine turnovers and committed 14. 

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Millersville for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
