Shepherd Football Holds Off Lock Haven

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –  Redshirt junior quarterback Lek Powell (Carlisle, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) completed 18-of-27 passes for 228 yards and two scores and redshirt sophomore running back Jordan Barnett (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge/FUMA/Southern Utah) rushed 19 times for 96 yards and a pair of  touchdowns to lead Shepherd (4-1, 2-0 PSAC East) to a 45-38 win over Lock Haven (2-3, 1-1 PSAC East) in PSAC East football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.

Shepherd took a 7-0 lead when redshirt senior running back Malakai Brown (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) scored on a one-yard plunge with 8:58 left in the first quarter. Freshman kicker Keith Baker (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) added the extra point. 

Baker connected on a 24-yard field goal with 2:13 left in the first quarter to up the Shepherd lead to 10-0.

Barnett scored on a one-yard run with 8:10 left in the second quarter.

Powell teamed with junior wide receiver Cameron Dorner (New Market, Md./Oakdale) on a 62-yard scoring pass with 5:24 left in the second quarter to increase the lead to 24-0.

Tony Nicassio connected on a 40-yard field goal with 1:12 left in the half to get the Bald Eagles on the board.

Graduate student running back Grant Swinehart (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby/VMI) scored on a five-yard run with 30 seconds left in the half to give the Rams a 31-3 advantage at the break.

Powell fired a nine-yard scoring strike to Brown with 5:49 left in the third quarter to open the second half scoring.

Jackson Ostrowsky teamed with Corahn Alleyne on a 45-yard scoring pass with 4:26 left in the third quarter to make it 38-10.

Ostrowsky followed with three more scoring passes to get Lock Haven to within seven points at 38-31 with 5:50 left in regulation.

He fired a 13-yard scoring pass to T'iar Young with 1:04 left in the third quarter. He teamed with Quon Williams on a 15-yard scoring play with 6:58 left in the fourth quarter and later combined with KJ Howard on a 22-yard score after Lock Haven recovered an onside kick.

Barnett scored on a one-yard run with 1:50 left to give the Rams a 45-31 lead.

Will Pickett scored for the Bald Eagles on a one-yard run with 39 seconds remaining, but the onside kick attempt was unsuccessful and Shepherd ran out the clock to seal the win.

Shepherd had 519 yards of total offense while Lock Haven totaled 497.

Ostrowsky completed 31-of-50 passes for 470 yards and four scores to lead Lock Haven.

Brown had seven carries for 87 yards and Swinehart added 17 carries for 75 yards as the Rams ran for 291 total yards.

Dorner led the Rams with four receptions for 97 yards. Young had eight catches for 112 yards and Alleyne added five receptions for 127 yards for the Bald Eagles

Sophomore defensive back Miles Greer (Springfield, Va./South County) recorded eight stops (four solos) and senior linebacker Harold O'Neal (Baltimore, Md./Harrisburg (Pa.)) also added eight tackles (two solos) to lead the Shepherd defense. Kasir Henry had a game-high 14 tackles (10 solos) for the Bald Eagles.

Redshirt senior punter Ryan Barrick (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) punted three times for a 47.0 average. He placed one punt inside the 20-yard line and had a long punt of 54 yards.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Chester for a noon contest.
