CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Shanley Woods had 15 points and Emily Anthony added 14 to lead West Virginia State (2-0) to a 91-60 win over Shepherd (0-2) in women's basketball action at the MEC/PSAC Conference Challenge at Charleston on Sunday.
Freshman forward
Lamaria Estridge (Walkersville, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) led Shepherd with a game-high 17 points. Estridge was 6-of-9 from the floor with a 5-of-8 effort from the foul line. She also grabbed four rebounds.
Junior guard
Annie Hunt (Ravenswood, W.Va./Ravenswood/Wheeling) added eight points, while sophomore guard
Kara Wehner (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) tossed in seven. Freshman guard
Trinity Turner (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) grabbed a team-high six rebounds, while sophomore guard
Samiyah Nasir (Gwynn Oak, Md./Howard/College of Saint Rose) contributed a team-high four steals.
Latisha Parris and Ashley Kerekes each added 12 points for the Yellow Jackets. Emiyah Fortenberry had 11 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Shepherd connected on 20-of-59 field goals (.339) with a 3-of-17 effort (.176) from three-point range. The Rams connected on 17-of-26 (.654) free throws.
West Virginia State was successful on 28-of-70 field goals (.400) with a 12-of-31 performance from beyond the arc. The Yellow Jackets drained 23-of-35 free throws (657).
West Virginia State had a 48-43 edge in rebounding. Shepherd forced 25 turnovers and committed 37.
The Rams return to action on Thursday when they host West Virginia Wesleyan for a 6 p.m. contest.
