SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore forward
Jenna Liska (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty/Frostburg State) and sophomore guard
Kara Wehner (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) each scored 16 points to lead Shepherd University (1-2) to a 67-64 win over West Virginia Wesleyan (2-1) in women's basketball at the Butcher Center on Thursday evening.
Liska hit 6-of-8 field goals with a 4-for-4 effort from the line. She added five rebounds and a game-high five assists. Wehner connected on 5-of-9 field goals with a 2-of-4 performance from three-point range. She was 4-of-4 from the line. Wehner added five boards, four assists, and three steals.
Junior guard
Annie Hunt (Ravenswood, W.Va./Ravenswood/Wheeling) added eight points, while sophomore forward
Carmaya Bowman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) had six points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Sydney Baird led West Virginia Wesleyan with 17 points and seven rebounds. Shelby Genes added 12 points.
The Bobcats held a 63-61 lead after Baird hit a jumper with 14 seconds left in regulation. Liska hit a jumper with 1:18 left and added a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left to give Shepherd a 65-63 advantage. Daveona Hatchell hit 1-of-2 free throws for the Bobcats with five seconds left to cut the lead to 65-64. Shepherd capped the win with a pair of free throws by Wehner with two seconds remaining. A three-point attempt by Baird missed at the buzzer.
Shepherd connected on 26-of-54 field goals (.481) with a 3-of-17 effort (.176) from three-point range. The Rams connected on 12-of-17 (.706) free throws.
West Virginia Wesleyan was successful on 19-of-62 field goals (.306) with a 5-of-19 performance (.263) from beyond the arc. The Bobcats drained 21-of-30 free throws (.700).
West Virginia Wesleyan had a 43-34 edge in rebounding. Shepherd forced 14 turnovers and committed 15.
The Rams return to action on Monday when they host Cheyney for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
