SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore guard
Marcus Banks (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) scored 15 points, and freshman guard
Brody Davis (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) added 14 to lead Shepherd (2-1) to a 73-62 win over Frostburg State (1-2) in men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday night.
Banks connected on 5-of-7 field goals with a 3-of-4 effort from three-point range. He was 2-of-4 from the line. He also tied graduate student forward
Chase Paar (Mount Airy, Md./Glenelg Country School/Towson) for game-high rebounding honors with seven boards. Twelve of Davis' 14 points came behind a 4-of-9 effort from beyond the arc.
Paar also scored 12 points, while senior forward
Carson Poffenberger (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) had 11 points and six boards.
Tony Pope scored a game-high 24 points for Frostburg State. Jay Shaun Freeman added eight points and four rebounds.
The Rams led by as many as 17 points in the second half and saw their lead dwindle to six points at 64-58 after a layup by Pope with 3:50 left. Shepherd closed the game on a 9-4 run to seal the victory.
Shepherd connected on 44 percent (22-50) of its field goals with a 39.1 percent (9-23) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 74.1 percent (20-27) of their free throws.
Frostburg State shot 35 percent (21-60) from the floor with a 35.7 percent (10-28) effort from beyond the arc. The Bobcats hit 83.3 percent (10-12) from the foul line.
Shepherd had a 40-32 edge on the boards. The Rams forced seven turnovers and committed 11.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Liberty for a 4 p.m. contest.
