Shepherd Men Top Virginia Union for Third Straight Win

RICHMOND, Va.  Sophomore guard Marcus Banks (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) and senior guard Jarod Robinson (Laurel, Md./Glenelg Country School) each scored a team-high 11 points to lead Shepherd University (7-3) to a 61-51 win over Virginia Union (4-7) in PSAC men's basketball action at Virginia Union on Friday night.

Banks hit 4-of-7 field goals with a 2-of-4 effort from three-point range. He was 1-of-2 from the foul line. Banks also added a game-high seven assists. Robinson connected on 4-of-8 field goals and was 3-of-7 from beyond the arc.

Graduate student forward Chase Paar (Mount Airy, Md./Glenelg Country School/Towson) added six points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while freshman guard Brody Davis (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) added nine points and nine boards.

Che Evans had a game-high 14 points to lead Virginia Union. Dalyaun Mitchell added nine points.

Shepherd had a 31-26 advantage at halftime.

The Rams led by as many as 17 points in the second half at 55-38 after a dunk by freshman forward Favor Okigweh (Edgewood, Md./Parkville/The Winchedon School) with 8:10 remaining. The Panthers used an 8-0 run to cut the lead to nine points at 55-46 after a three-pointer by Evans with 3:30 left.

Shepherd closed the game on a 6-5 run to seal the win.

Shepherd connected on 41.5 percent (22-53) of its field goals with a 43.3 percent (13-30) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 50 percent (4-8) of their free throws.

Virginia Union shot 32.1 percent (18-56) from the floor with a 33.3 percent (9-27) effort from beyond the arc. The Panthers hit 75 percent (6-8) from the foul line.

Shepherd had a 40-24 advantage in rebounds. The Rams forced six turnovers and committed12.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Gannon for a 5 p.m. contest.
