SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore guard
Marcus Banks (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist)
scored a team-high 19 points to lead Shepherd University (8-4, 4-1 PSAC) to an 80-65 win over Pitt-Johnstown (7-6, 3-3 PSAC) in PSAC men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday.
Banks hit on 9-of-12 field goals with a 1-of-2 effort from three-point range. He added four rebounds and a pair of assists.
Graduate student forward
Chase Paar (Mount Airy, Md./Glenelg Country School/Towson) added 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Senior forward
Carson Poffenberger (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) contributed 12 points, six rebounds, two steals, and an assist. Freshman guard
Brody Davis (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) had eight points and seven boards.
Ryan Smith, who went over 1,000 points for his career, scored a game-high 28 points for the Mountain Cats. Baden Forup added 15 points and six rebounds.
Shepherd had a 39-29 lead at halftime.
Shepherd connected on 52.6 percent (30-57) of its field goals with a 33.3 percent (7-21) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 65 percent (13-20) of their free throws.
Pitt-Johnstown shot 45.6 percent (26-57) from the floor with a 33.3 percent (2-6) effort from beyond the arc. The Mountain Cats hit 91.7 percent (11-12) from the foul line.
Shepherd had a 35-28 advantage in rebounds. The Rams forced 14 turnovers and committed 10.
The Rams return to action on Jan. 3 when they host West Chester for a 7:30 p.m. game.
