PEMBROKE, N.C. – Shepherd University (2-5) dropped a doubleheader to UNC Pembroke (6-0) in baseball action at UNC Pembroke on Saturday. UNC Pembroke gained an 8-4 win in game one and added a 16-7 victory in the nightcap.
The Braves took advantage of four walks, three errors, and a hit to plate five runs in the fifth inning in game one.
UNC Pembroke added a run in the sixth as Andrew Jenner led off with a double and later scored on a wild pitch.
Shepherd got on the board in the seventh when junior catcher Brayden Meskill (Bordentown, N.J./Notre Dame/Mercer County CC) singled and later scored on a double by redshirt-junior outfielder Trey Sine (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg).
The Braves added two runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI-double by Isaisas Villareal and an RBI-single by Jenner.
Shepherd got a three-run homer from redshirt-junior outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC) in the ninth to complete the scoring.
Sine led the Rams with a pair of hits. Shepherd outhit UNC Pembroke, 8-4.
Luke Barrow (5.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 7 K, 3 BB) (1-0) gained the win. Jake Inman (4.0 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 7 K, 1 BB) gained the save. Redshirt-junior pitcher Trevor Sharp (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) (4.1 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 K, 3 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
Clinging to a 5-3 lead in the nightcap, UNC Pembroke scored seven runs in the sixth. Blake Hinson belted a three-run triple to fuel the rally.
Shepherd added two runs in the seventh on as senior outfielder Idris Carter (Uniondale, N.Y./Roosevelt/Stony Brook) and Daggers each singled and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Rams took advantage of two errors to add two runs in the eighth. Sine reached on a wild pitch on a strikeout and scored when junior shortstop Greg Borges (Odenton, Md./Avalon Day School/Allegany College of Maryland) reached on an error. Borges later scored on an error.
The Braves added four runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Senior outfielder Corey Jamison (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) went 3-for-4 and Carter had a pair of hits to pace the Rams.
Hinson went 3-for-4 and drove in five runs for the Braves.
Jacob Smith (2.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB) (1-0) gained the win for the Braves. Senior pitcher Chris Chaney (Falling Waters, W.Va./Saint James/Maryland) (1.0 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (1-1) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Feb. 23 when they travel to USC Beaufort for a 6 p.m. contest.
