BLUFFTON, S.C. – Shepherd University (3-5) rallied past USC Beaufort (4-7) for a 7-5 victory in baseball action at USC Beaufort on Friday night.
The Sand Sharks took a 2-0 lead in the second inning behind RBI singles from Tyler Kennedy and John Leland.
Shepherd answered back with a run in the fourth. Junior shortstop Greg Borges (Odenton, Md./Avalon Day School/Allegany College of Maryland) singled and then stole second base and third base. Senior outfielder Idris Carter (Uniondale, N.Y./Roosevelt/Stony Brook) followed with a run-scoring single.
USC Beaufort added two runs in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Brian Meyer's RBI single keyed the rally.
Shepherd plated four runs in the sixth to take a 5-4 advantage. Redshirt-junior infielder Wyatt Miles (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove/Frederick CC) smacked a two-run double to key the scoring outburst.
The Rams tacked on two more runs in the seventh with an RBI single by senior outfielder Corey Jamison (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) to up their lead to 7-4.
The Sand Sharks added a run in the ninth on an RBI ground out by Anthony Storzieri.
Borges went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored to lead a nine-hit attack for the Rams. He added a game-high four stolen bases.
Kennedy and Leland each had a pair of hits for USC Beaufort.
Senior pitcher Chris Chaney (Falling Waters, W.Va./Saint James/Maryland) (4.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 K, 1 BB) (2-1) picked up the win. Josh Patterson (6.0 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 2 ER, 3 K, 1 BB) (0-3) took the loss for the Sand Sharks.
The two teams return to action on Saturday for a 5 p.m. contest in the second game of a three-game set.
