Shepherd Women Fall to West Chester

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Leah Johnson scored a game-high 28 points to lead West Chester (17-5, 12-4 PSAC) to a 77-66 win over Shepherd  University (6-15, 4-12 PSAC) in PSAC women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday night.

Freshman guard Kara Wehner (Staten Island, NY/Xaverian) led the Rams with a career-high 21 points. She connected on 8-of-13 field goals with a 2-of-3 effort from three-point range. She drained 3-of-4 free throws.

Sophomore guard Peyton Grant (Plymouth, Maine/Dexter Regional) added 15 points, while junior guard Jordan Carr (Charles Town, W.Va./Jefferson) tossed in nine. Junior guard/forward Sydney Bolles (Elkview, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) added eight points and five boards and freshman forward Carmaya Bowman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) contributed six points and a team-high six rebounds.

Johnson, who became the program's all-time leading scorer in the first half, added eight rebounds and six assists. Emily McAteer had 16 points, while Anna McTamney tossed in 13 points.

West Chester had a 44-28 lead at halftime as Johnson (13) and McAteer combined for 25 first-half points.

The Rams rallied for a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to within four points at 65-61 after Carr hit 1-of-2 free throws with 1:48 remaining. West Chester closed on a 12-5 run to cap the win

Shepherd shot 47.9 percent (23-48) from the floor with a 37.5 percent (6-16) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 73.7 percent (14-19) of their free throws.

West Chester shot 45.2 percent (28-62) from the floor with a 38.5 percent (5-13) effort from three-point range. The Golden Rams shot 88.9 percent (16-18) from the foul line.

West Chester had a 35-28 advantage in the boards. The Rams forced 11 turnovers and committed 13.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Mansfield for a 1 p.m. contest.
