Shepherd Softball Splits Pair at The Spring Games

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Shepherd University (7-7) split a pair of games in softball action at The Spring Games on Wednesday. The Rams dropped a 5-2 decision to Southern Connecticut State (2-5) in an early game and posted a 3-1 victory in eight innings with Northwood (13-8) in the later contest.

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead against Southern Connecticut State in the third inning as senior outfielders Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) and Olivia Reese (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) each singled and later scored when junior outfielder Lauren Alt (Upper Tract, W.Va./Petersburg) reached on an error.

Southern Connecticut State took a 3-2 lead in the fifth as Rachel Miller had an RBI-single and the Owls added two more runs on an infield error.

Southern Connecticut State plated two more runs in the sixth as Emily Lange had a run-scoring single and later scored on a wild pitch.

Lange went 2-for-3 to lead the Owls.

Jessica Perucki (7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 5 K, 0 BB) (2-1) gained the win. Senior pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (7.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (2-2) took the loss.

The Rams plated three runs in the top of the eighth against Northwood and held on for a 3-1 win.

Forte was placed on second due to the tiebreaker rule. Alt singled to right to move Forte to third. Graduate student catcher Alex Mantz singled up the middle to move Alt to third and score Forte. Freshman pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) hit a sacrifice fly to score Alt and advance Mantz to second.  Mantz later moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single off the bat of junior infielder Lexi Clatterbuck (Front Royal, Va./Skyline).

The Owls scored a run in the bottom of the eighth. Jenna O'Berry was placed on second and advanced to third on a ground out by Jillian Krawczak. O'Berry scored on a ground out by Ashlyn Lundquist.

Alt and Mantz each went 2-for-3 to lead an eight-hit attack for the Rams.

Madelayne Ruffner (8.0 IP, 3 H, 1 UER, 10 K, 1 BB) (5-0) earned the complete game win. Kamden Binney (7.2 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (2-4) took the loss.

The Rams return to action on Friday when they face New Haven at 11:30 a.m. and Saint Anselm at 1:45 p.m. at The Spring Games.
