SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (6-12, 1-5 PSAC East) split a doubleheader to Mansfield (7-12, 3-7 PSAC East) in PSAC East baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Friday. Shepherd recorded a 5-4 win in game one and dropped a 7-1 decision in the nightcap.
Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one as junior shortstop Greg Borges (Odenton, Md./Avalon Day School/Allegany College of Maryland) reached on an error and later scored on a single by redshirt junior outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC).
The Rams added three runs in the third with a two-run single by freshman catcher Collin Snyder (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend) keying the rally.
The Mountaineers cut the lead to 4-2 on a two-run homer by Tyler Swineford in the fourth.
The Rams added a run in the sixth behind an RBI-triple off the bat of senior outfielder Corey Jamison (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) to take a 5-2 advantage.
Mansfield got a two-run homer by Zack Shatzer in the seventh, but the Rams held on for a 5-4 triumph.
Redshirt-junior pitcher Trevor Sharp (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) (4.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 5 K, 3 BB) (1-2) earned the win. Redshirt-junior pitcher Brenden Lewis (Hurricane, W.Va./Hurricane) (1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) (1) picked up the save. Austin Lewis (5.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 10 K, 4 BB) (1-2) took the loss.
Mansfield took a 1-0 lead in the third in the nightcap on a single by Jacob Houtz.
Shepherd tied the game in the sixth as sophomore outfielder Bodie Pullen (Winchester, Va./James Wood) reached first on a wild pitch on a strikeout. He later scored on a single by graduate student third baseman Connor Dewees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion).
The Mountaineers scored six runs on four hits in the seventh to earn the split. A two-run homer by Jackson Halla and a two-run single by Brett Stewart highlighted the rally.
Eric Gustofson (7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 15 K, 0 BB) (1-3) gained the win. Freshman pitcher Michael Burnley (Sicklerville, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) (1.2 IP, 0 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 1 BB) (0-1) took the loss.
The two teams return to action on Monday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Mansfield.
