BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Shepherd University (12-12, 2-4 PSAC East) split a doubleheader with Bloomsburg (13-8, 1-1 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball action at Bloomsburg on Sunday. The Rams dropped a 5-1 decision in game one and recorded a 5-1 triumph in the nightcap to gain the split.
The Rams used a 14-hit attack en route to the nightcap win.
Bloomsburg took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap when Bella Culp tripled and later scored on ground out by Sage Weidlich.
The Rams tied the game in the second as junior third baseman Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Trevecca Nazarene) singled and later scored when freshman first baseman Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) reached on an infield single.
Shepherd took a 2-1 lead in the third as senior outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) singled and later scored on a bunt single by Moore.
The Rams added three runs in the fifth on a run-scoring single by senior second baseman Caitlin Donnelly (Newark, Del./Padua Academy) and a two-run triple by sophomore catcher Camdyn Noland (Summit Point, W.Va./Washington).
Freshman pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) and Noland each had three hits to lead the Rams
Ruffner (7.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 10 K, 1 BB) (9-1) earned the complete game victory. Kelly Eberly (5.0 IP, 13 H, 5 ER, 6 K, 2 BB) (3-3) took the loss.
Bloomsburg took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-single by Josie Straigis in game one.
The Huskies added two runs in the third on a two-run blast by Straigis.
Shepherd got on the scoreboard on a solo homer off the bat of Noland in the sixth.
The Huskies added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI-triple by Culp and an RBI-single by Weidlich.
Callie Sowers (7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 9 K, 2 BB) (10-2) earned the win. Senior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) (3.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 K, 3 BB) (0-5) took the loss.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Kutztown for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
