SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (5-7) dropped a doubleheader to Frostburg State (7-5) in baseball doubleheader action at Fairfax Field on Friday. The Bobcats gained a 10-5 win in game one and rallied for a 10-7 win in the nightcap.
Frostburg State took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in game one on a three-run homer by Ethan Kiple.
Shepherd got a run in the fourth on a solo blast off the bat of graduate student third baseman Connor Dewees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion).
The Bobcats added five runs in the fifth to take an 8-1 lead. A three-run homer by Danny Estrada keyed the rally.
After Frostburg added single runs in the sixth and seventh, Shepherd rallied with four runs in the seventh.
Redshirt-junior outfielder Trey Sine (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) and senior outfielder Corey Jamison (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) each walked with the bases loaded to score a run, and junior shortstop Greg Borges (Odenton, Md./Avalon Day School/Allegany College of Maryland) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Sine later scored from third on a balk.
Dewees led the Rams with a pair of hits.
Cy Probst and Kiple each had two hits for the Bobcats.
Jacob McDonald (6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 10 K, 1 BB) (2-1) gained the win. Redshirt-junior pitcher Trevor Sharp (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) (4.2 IP, 4 H, 6 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) (0-2) took the loss.
Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the second in the nightcap as Sine walked with the bases loaded to score a run and Borges drove in another with a bases-loaded infield single.
Senior outfielder Idris Carter (Uniondale, N.Y./Roosevelt/Stony Brook) belted a two-run homer in the third to give the Rams a 4-0 advantage.
The Bobcats rallied with a pair of runs in the fourth.
Frostburg State got a two-run double from Kiple in the fifth to tie the game.
Shepherd plated three runs in the sixth to take a 7-4 lead. The Rams got an RBI-single from Borges and RBI-double by junior infielder Aidan Greaney (New Windsor, Md./South Carroll/Frederick CC). Borges later scored on a balk.
Frostburg State cut the lead to 7-5 with a run in the seventh on an RBI-single by Kiple.
The Bobcats rallied with five runs in the ninth to gain the 10-7 win. Ryan Bouma hit a two-run double to key the rally.
Borges had three hits, while Carter, Jamison, and junior catcher Brayden Meskill (Bordentown, N.J./Notre Dame/Mercer County CC) each added a pair for the Rams.
Kiple went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs for the Bobcats.
