Shepherd Baseball Splits with Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Shepherd University (13-17, 8-10 PSAC East) split a doubleheader with Kutztown (11-18, 8-12 PSAC East) in PSAC East baseball doubleheader action at Kutztown on Saturday. Kutztown gained a 10-3 win in game one, while Shepherd earned a split with an 8-2 triumph in the nightcap.

Trailing 1-0 in the third inning in game two, Shepherd plated six runs with a three-run homer by junior shortstop Greg Borges (Odenton, Md./Avalon Day School/Allegany College of Maryland) and a two-run blast by senior outfielder Idris Carter (Uniondale, N.Y./Roosevelt/Stony Brook) highlighting the rally.

Kutztown got a solo homer by Jimmy Kerley in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 6-2.

Junior infielder Aidan Greaney (New Windsor, Md./South Carroll/Frederick CC) added a run-scoring double in the fifth and a solo homer in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Greaney went 4-for-4 to lead a 13-hit attack for the Rams.

Freshman pitcher Michael Burnley (Sicklerville, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) (4.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) (2-1) gained the win. Senior pitcher Chris Chaney (Falling Waters, W.Va./Saint James/Maryland) (3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K, 0 BB) picked up the save (1).  Paul Moretski (5.2 IP, 12 H, 7 R, 3 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (2-5) took the loss.

Kerley went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead a 16-hit effort for the Golden Bears in game one. Bo Barthol added a 3-for-4 effort.

Shepherd scored all its runs in the sixth as redshirt-junior outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC) belted a two-run homer and redshirt-junior second baseman Wyatt Miles (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove/Frederick CC) drove in a run on a ground out.

Jake Skrocki (6.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) (3-3) gained the win. Redshirt freshman Daniel Quintana (Haymarket, Va./Paul VI/James Madison) (3.1 IP, 10 H, 7 ER, 3 K, 2 BB) (2-4) took the loss.

The two teams return to action on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Fairfax Field.
