Shepherd Baseball Sweeps Kutztown

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (15-17, 10-10 PSAC East) belted 11 home runs on the day en route to a doubleheader sweep over Kutztown (13-24, 7-13 PSAC East) in PSAC East baseball action at Fairfax Field on Sunday. Shepherd gained a 10-1 win in game one and held on for a 9-8 triumph in the nightcap.

The Rams used a 12-hit attack and smacked six home runs in the game one victory. The six-home run effort ties the Shepherd single-game mark set against Columbia Union on April 10, 2008.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the second as junior outfielder Mike Guzzardo (Mullica Hill, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep/RCSJ Cumberland) doubled and later scored on a single off the bat of junior first baseman Aidan Greaney (New Windsor, Md./South Carroll/Frederick CC).

The Rams added two runs in the third on solo blasts by senior outfielder Idris Carter (Uniondale, N.Y./Roosevelt/Stony Brook) and freshman catcher Collin Snyder (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend).

Shepherd added three runs in the fifth on a solo homer by senior outfielder Corey Jamison (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) and a two-run blast off the bat of redshirt-junior outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC).

Carter and Snyder each belted two-run blasts in the sixth to give the Rams a 10-0 advantage.

Kutztown got a solo homer from Anthony Rossillo in the seventh to avoid the shutout.

Snyder went 3-for-4, drove in three runs, and scored three to pace the Rams.

Redshirt-junior pitcher Trevor Sharp (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) (5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 6 K, 3 BB) (2-3) gained the win. Zach Male (5.1 IP, 11 H, 9 ER, 6 K, 1 BB) (1-6) took the loss.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap on a solo homer by Daggers.

Kutztown tied the game in the third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jason Wolff.

Daggers added a solo blast in the bottom of the third to give the Rams a 2-1 lead.

The Rams plated four runs in the fourth as graduate student third baseman Connor Dewees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) and Carter smacked solo homers to key the rally.

Jimmy Kerley hit a solo homer to key a three-run fifth for the Golden Bears to cut the lead to 6-4.

Shepherd answered back in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run homer by redshirt infielder Wyatt Miles (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove/Frederick CC) to take a 9-4 advantage.

Kutztown scored three runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 9-7. Kerley had a run-scoring single and later scored on a sacrifice fly to key the scoring outburst.

The Golden Bears loaded the bases in the seventh with no outs and Brennan Rozich scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Ethan Martini to cut the deficit to 9-8. Senior pitcher Chris Chaney (Falling Waters, W.Va./Saint James/Maryland) proceeded to get a line out by Kerley and a ground out by Wolff to secure the win.

Daggers went 3-for-3 with a pair of round-trippers to pace the Rams. Daggers and Carter each had three home runs on the day.

Kerley went 3-for-5 to lead the Golden Bears.

Graduate student pitcher Tanner Dixon (Frederick, Md./Frederick) (1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 1 K, 3 BB) (1-1) gained the win. Trevor Leverington (4.0 IP, 9 H, 9 ER, 2 K, 5 BB) (2-5) took the loss.
