Shepherd Softball Falls Twice to Bloomsburg; Ruffner Sets Strikeout Mark

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (18-22, 8-14 PSAC East) dropped a doubleheader to Bloomsburg (23-14, 12-8 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball action at Sara Cree Field On Senior Day on Saturday. Bloomsburg recorded an 8-6 win in game one and added a 5-1 victory in the nightcap. Freshman pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) fanned 10 in the nightcap to give her 196 on the season to break the previous Shepherd single season mark of 187 set by Nichole Pitcock in 2011.

Bloomsburg broke a 4-4 tie with four runs in the seventh in game one. Kayleigh Lenner, Sarah Yamrick,  Mia Nemeth, and Emmie Rowe each had run-scoring singles.

Junior third baseman Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Trevecca Nazarene) belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to complete the scoring.

Moore went 3-for-4 with a pair of homers and four runs batted in to pace the Rams.  Senior outfielder Olivia Reese (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) added a 3-for-4 effort.

Sage Weidlich went 3-for-3 for the Huskies.

Callie Sowers (7.0 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 8 K, 1 BB) (16-4) gained the win. Senior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick)(2.0 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (1-7) took the loss.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning in the nightcap.

Moore reached on an error and later scored on a single off the bat of graduate student catcher Alex Mantz (Edinburg, Va./Central).

Bloomsburg tied the game in the fifth on an RBI-single by Weidlich.

The Huskies plated four runs in the seventh to gain the sweep. A two-run double by Taylor Kranzley and a two-run single by Rowe keyed the rally.

Weidlich went 2-for-3 for the Huskies.

Lyndsey Reinoehl (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (2-3) earned the win. Freshman pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (6.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 10 K, 5 BB) (13-4) took the loss.              

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Shippensburg for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

Notes: The Rams honored seniors Caitlin Donnelly, Isabella Forte, Katie Laing, Alex Mantz, Kourtney McNatt, Elizabeth Padiotis, Olivia Reese, and Hannah Ruffner in a pregame ceremony for Senior Day ... the Rams have two remaining home dates on the season at Sara Cree Field (Millersville on April 26 at 2 p.m. and West Chester on April 27 at 1 p.m.).
