Shepherd Baseball Drops Pair to West Chester

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (15-19, 10-12 PSAC East) dropped a doubleheader to West Chester (31-5, 17-5 PSAC East) in PSAC East baseball action at Fairfax Field on Friday. West Chester gained a 5-2 win in game one and added a 12-3 win in the nightcap.

West Chester took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one as Evan Profy singled and later scored on a ground out by John DeMucci.

The Golden Rams added a run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Darius Troche to take a 2-0 lead.

Shepherd cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the third. Senior outfielder Idris Carter (Uniondale, N.Y./Roosevelt/Stony Brook) led off and was hit-by-pitch. He later scored on a single by freshman catcher Collin Snyder (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend).

The Golden Rams plated three runs in the sixth with Sean Szestowicki, Troche, and Zack Miles each driving in a run.

Shepherd added a run in the seventh as Carter led off with a single and later scored on a single off the bat of redshirt junior Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC).

Graduate student third baseman Connor Dewees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.

Szestowicki went 3-for-3 for the Golden Rams.

Julian Costa (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 11 K, 2 BB) (7-2) gained the win. Redshirt-freshman pitcher Daniel Quintana (Haymarket, Va./Paul VI/James Madison) (5.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (2-5) took the loss. 

Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the second in the nightcap. Junior shortstop Greg Borges (Odenton, Md./Avalon Day School/Allegany College of Maryland) walked, moved to second when Carter walked, went to third on an attempted double steal, and later scored on a single off the bat of redshirt-junior second baseman Wyatt Miles (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove/Frederick CC). Junior catcher Brayden Meskill (Bordentown, N.J./Notre Dame/Mercer County CC) followed with a walk and later scored from third on a wild pitch.

West Chester scored four runs in the fourth behind a solo homer by Joe Kaleck and a three-run blast by Casey Vaughan.

Shepherd cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-single by senior outfielder Corey Jamison (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport).

The Golden Rams scored seven runs on five hits in the fifth to up its lead to 11-3. Miles hit a three-run double to key the rally.

Anthony Boccio hit a solo blast in the sixth for the Golden Rams to complete the scoring.

Meskil, Miles, Daggers, and Jamison each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Vaughan went 3-for-3 to pace the Golden Rams.

Dylan Horowitz (1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 K, 3 BB) (3-0) gained the win. Freshman pitcher Michael Burnley (Sicklerville, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) (4.0 IP, 2 H, 5 ER, 8 K, 3 BB) (2-2) took the loss.          

The two teams return to action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at West Chester.
