Shepherd Baseball Sweeps West Liberty; Dhima Tosses No-Hitter

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Shepherd University (18-20) swept a doubleheader with West Liberty (10-32) in non-conference baseball action at West Liberty on Wednesday. The Rams gained a 13-9 win in game one and added an 8-0 win in the nightcap as junior pitcher John Dhima (Frederick, Md./Urbana) tossed a no-hitter.

Shepherd took a 3-0 lead in the second inning in the nightcap as senior outfielder Idris Carter (Uniondale, N.Y./Roosevelt/Stony Brook) smacked a two-run double and later scored on a single off the bat of redshirt-junior second baseman Wyatt Miles (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove/Frederick CC).

The Rams added four runs in the third on a two-run triple by junior outfielder Mike Guzzardo (Mullica Hill, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep/RCSJ Cumberland) and a two-run homer by Carter.

Shepherd added a run in the seventh on a solo blast by graduate student third baseman Connor Dewees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion).

Carter, Dewees, and Guzzardo each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Dhima (7.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 5 K, 1 BB) (1-0) picked up the win. Mason Bille (3.0 IP, 5 H, 7 ER, 3 K, 3 BB) (0-3) took the loss.

The two teams combined for 25 hits in the game one slugfest.

Shepherd took a 4-0 lead in the first as Carter hit a three-run triple and later scored on a single by junior first baseman Aidan Greaney (New Windsor, Md./South Carroll/Frederick CC).

The Rams added a pair of runs in the second and four more in the fourth to take a 10-0 lead with a two-run double by Carter highlighting the rally.

West Liberty rallied with four runs in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run single by Will Balgo keying the rally.

The Rams took a 12-4 lead in the sixth behind run-scoring singles by junior shortstop Greg Borges (Odenton, Md./Avalon Day School/Allegany College of Maryland) and redshirt junior outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC).

After West Liberty scored a pair of runs in the sixth, Shepherd added a run in the seventh on an RBI-double from Greaney.

The Hilltoppers plated three runs in the seventh with RBI-doubles from Balbo and Jacob Sherman igniting the rally.

Carter went 3-for-4, drove in five runs, and scored three to lead a 13-hit effort for the Rams.

Redshirt-sophomore pitcher Nate Mikulski (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) (1.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) (1-2) earned the win. Stephen Graebe (1.2 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 0 K, 4 BB) (0-1) took the loss. 
       
The Rams return to action on Friday when they travel to Millersville for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
