Shepherd Softball Splits with Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Shepherd University (17-17, 7-9 PSAC East) split a doubleheader with Millersville (19-12, 8-6 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball action at Millersville on Monday. Millersville gained a 7-3 win in game one and Shepherd earned the split with a 7-5 victory in the nightcap.

The Rams took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap as senior outfielder Olivia Reese (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) had an RBI-single and senior second baseman Caitlin Donnelly (Newark, Del./Padua Academy) added a two-run single.

After Aleese Angelo hit a homer for the Marauders in the bottom of the first, Shepherd added three runs in the second with freshman first baseman Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) and junior third baseman Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Trevecca Nazarene) each driving in a run.

After Millersville added an unearned run in the second, Shepherd took a 7-2 lead in the fifth behind an RBI-single off the bat of junior infielder Lexi Clatterbuck    (Front Royal, Va./Skyline).

The Marauders would add two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh as the Rams held on for the win.

Senior outfielder Isabella Forte (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville), Clatterbuck, Donnelly, and Reese each had a pair of hits for the Rams.

Senior pitcher Katie Laing (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick)(7.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 8 K, 2 BB) (1-6) earned the complete game win. Morgan Crutcher (0.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) (5-6) took the loss.

Clinging to a 3-1 lead in game one, Millersville added four in the sixth on a two-run homer by Carly Vaughan and a two-run double by Angelo.

The Rams added a pair of runs in the seventh on a two-run double by Clatterbuck.

Alex Schaefer (3.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 K, 0 BB) (6-6) earned the win. Freshman pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (5.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) (12-2) took the loss.  

The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Kutztown for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
