Shepherd Baseball Splits with Lock Haven

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (19-25, 12-18 PSAC East) split a doubleheader with Lock Haven (11-32, 8-22 PSAC East) in PSAC East baseball action at Fairfax Field on Senior Day on Thursday. The Bald Eagles gained an 8-6 win in eight innings in game one and Shepherd used a 16-hit attack in a 16-1 victory in the nightcap.

Lock Haven took a 3-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run homer by Jaxson Pupo keying the rally.

Shepherd plated four runs in the bottom of the frame on a three-run blast by graduate student third baseman Connor Dewees (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) and a solo homer from junior shortstop Greg Borges (Odenton, Md./Avalon Day School/Allegany College of Maryland) to take a 4-3 lead.

Lock Haven tied the game in the third on an RBI-single by Dante Bruno.

The Bald Eagles took a 6-4 lead when Pupo hit a two-run homer in the seventh.

Shepherd forced the extra inning with a two-run single from redshirt-junior second baseman Wyatt Miles (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove/Frederick CC) in the bottom of the seventh.

Francisco Taveras hit a two-run homer in the eighth to lift the Bald Eagles to the win.

Redshirt-junior outfielder Trey Sine (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) went 2-for-2 to pace the Rams.

Pupo went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs for the Bald Eagles.

Matt Lingenfelter (1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1K 1 BB) (3-6) picked up the win. Tyler Bauder (1.0 IP 1 H, 0 R, 1 K, 0 BB) got the save (1). Redshirt-junior  pitcher Eli Lam (Elkton, Va./Spotswood/Patrick Henry CC) (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 ER 1 K, 1 BB) (2-2) took the loss.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first in the nightcap on an RBI-single from Dewees.

The Rams plated five runs on six hits to take a 6-0 lead in the second. Junior infielder Aidan Greaney (New Windsor, Md./South Carroll/Frederick CC) ripped a two-run single to key the scoring outburst.

Shepherd added a run in the third as Miles doubled and later scored on a single by senior outfielder Idris Carter (Uniondale, N.Y./Roosevelt/Stony Brook).

Lock Haven got on the board in the fourth on a solo blast by Pupo.

The Rams added a run in the bottom of the frame to up the lead to 8-1.

Shepherd increased its lead to 12-1 with four runs in the fifth behind a run-scoring single by redshirt-junior outfielder Sam Daggers (Galloway, N.J./Absegami/Rowan Gloucester CC) and a three-run home run by Dewees.

The Rams added four more runs in the sixth as Borges, Miles, senior outfielder Corey Jamison (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport), and sophomore outfielder Ethan Jones (Oakton, Va./Oakton) each drove in a run.

Dewees went 2-for-4 with four RBI and Daggers added a 3-for-3 effort with three runs scored to lead the Rams.

Freshman pitcher Michael Burnley (Sicklerville, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) (4.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 6 K, 3 BB) (3-2) earned the win. Will Stambaugh (2.0 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 2 K, 1 BB) (1-5) took the loss. 
   
The two teams return to action on Friday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Lock Haven.
