Shepherd Football Shuts Out Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. –  Redshirt junior quarterback Lek Powell (Carlisle, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) completed 16-of-22 passes for 184 yards and two scores and redshirt senior running back Malakai Brown (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) rushed eight times for 82 yards and two touchdowns to lead Shepherd (3-1, 1-0 PSAC East) to a 38-0 win over Shippensburg (1-3, 0-1 PSAC East) in PSAC East football action at Shippensburg on Saturday.

Shepherd took a 7-0 lead when Brown raced 56 yards for a score with 8:58 left in the first quarter. Freshman kicker Keith Baker (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) added the extra point.    

Powell teamed with senior wide receiver Barry Hill (Highland Springs, Va./Varina/West Virginia State) on a 31-yard scoring pass with 8:33 left in the second quarter.

Brown scored on a one-yard plunge with 5:59 left in the half to increase the lead to 21-0. The score was set up when graduate student linebacker Joseph Groves (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County/William & Mary) recovered the kickoff at the Shippensburg 28–yard line.

Shepherd took a 28-0 lead into the break when sophomore defensive back/return specialist Miles Greer (Springfield, Va./South County) fielded a punt and ran 61 yards to a touchdown with 38 seconds left in the half.

The Rams opened the second half scoring when Powell fired a 57-yard scoring strike to junior wide receiver Cameron Dorner (New Market, Md./Oakdale) with 8:10 left in the third quarter to take a 35-0 advantage.

Baker connected on a career-long 37-yard field goal with 8:48 remaining to wrap up the scoring.

Shepherd had 310 yards of total offense while limiting Shippensburg to 177 total yards, with just 21 yards coming on the ground.

Sam Stoner completed 10-of-11 passes for 83 yards and Vincent Micucci was 10-of-13 for 73 yards for the Raiders.

Tanner Hess rushed 10 times for 21 yards to lead Shippensburg.

Dorner led the Rams with four receptions for 76 yards. Karim Brice had five catches for 46 yards for Shippensburg.

Junior linebacker JT Kouame-Yao (Centreville, Va./Westfield) paced the Shepherd defense with a game-high 13 tackles (six solos), 4.5 tackles-for-loss, and a sack. Senior linebacker Harold O'Neal (Baltimore, Md./Harrisburg (Pa.)) added nine stops (two solos) with a pair of tackles-for-loss (-6 yards) and a half sack (-2 yards). The Rams recorded six sacks on the day. DJ Jackson and Nate Myers each had eight tackles for the Raiders.

Redshirt senior punter Ryan Barrick (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) punted six times for a 37.3 average. He placed three punts inside the 20-yard line and had a long punt of 45 yards.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Lock Haven at noon for Youth Football Day/Pink Game.

Notes: Shepherd posted its second shutout of the season (23-0 win over Southern Connecticut State in the season opener) … Greer's punt return touchdown was the second of his career … Kouame-Yao's 13 tackles set a career-high effort … the old mark was 12 against Southern Connecticut State in 2023 … the Rams recorded their sixth straight win in the series with Shippensburg.
