SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt junior running back
Jordan Barnett (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge/FUMA/Southern Utah) rushed 14 times for 90 yards and three touchdowns to lead Shepherd (3-4, 3-1 PSAC East) to a 37-13 win over Bloomsburg (1-6, 0-4 PSAC East) in PSAC East football action at Bloomsburg on Saturday.
Shepherd took a 7-0 lead when graduate student quarterback
Michael Hardyway (Winchester, Cal./Oceanside/Bucknell) teamed with freshman wide receiver
Carrington Nickens-Yzer (Clifton, Va./Centreville) on the first play from scrimmage with 14:42 left in the first quarter. Sophomore kicker
Keith Baker (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) added the extra point.
Shepherd took a 10-0 lead on a 24-yard field goal by Baker with 9:57 left in the first quarter. The score was set up by an interception by junior defensive back
Will Johnson (Manassas, Va./Brentsville District).
Barnett scored on a one-yard plunge with 1:42 left in the first quarter to up the lead to 16-0.
Barnett scored on a three-yard run with 6:41 left in the half to take a 23-0 advantage into the break.
Barnett scored his third touchdown of the game on a one-yard run with 10:19 left in the third quarter to open the second half scoring. The score was preceded by an interception by graduate student defensive back
Klayton Batten (Waldorf, Md./St. Charles).
KJ Riley teamed with Jerry Griffen-Batchler on a 20-yard scoring pass with 35 seconds left in the third quarter for the Huskies to cut the lead to 30-7.
Batten forced a fumble, recovered it, and raced 20 yards for a score with 9:05 remaining in the game to increase the Shepherd lead to 37-7.
Bloomsburg added a score with 2:42 left when Riley tossed a five-yard scoring pass to Mike Conway.
Hardyway completed 12-of-24 passes for 150 yards. Riley was 14-of-25 for 142 yards for Bloomsburg.
Nickens Yzer led the Shepherd receivers with two catches for 68 yards. Griffen-Batchler had five receptions for 58 yards for Bloomsburg.
Riley had 18 carries for 75 yards for the Huskies.
Shepherd amassed 313 yards of total offense and Bloomsburg had 307 yards.
Freshman defensive back
Tyrin Chinn-Thompson (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) had eight tackles (five solos) to lead the Shepherd defense. Cole Turner had seven stops for Bloomsburg.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host East Stroudsburg at noon for Homecoming.
Notes: Shepherd snaps a two-game losing streak in the series with Bloomsburg with the win … the Rams take a 4-3 edge in the series … Batten has scored on a punt return, an interception, and a fumble return this season.
