ETTRICK, Va. – Junior guard
Marcus Banks (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) scored a game-high 18 points to lead Shepherd University (2-0) to a 62-53 win over Winston-Salem State (0-2) for a 62-53 victory in men's basketball action at the Trojan Tip-Off Classic at Virginia State on Saturday.
Banks connected on 5-of-13 field goals with a 1-of-4 effort from three-point range. He was 7-of-11 from the foul line. He added seven boards, two assists, and two steals.
Sophomore guard
Elwyne Wordlaw (Frederick, Md./Frederick) added 17 points, while sophomore guard
Brody Davis (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) had 13 points and six rebounds.
Sophomore forward
Favor Okigweh (Edgewood, Md./Parkville/The Winchedon School) grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. Sophomore forward
Daouda Traore (Silver Spring, Md./Clinton Grace Christian/St. Thomas Aquinas) contributed 11 points and seven rebounds.
Tyre Boykins had 16
points and
Abou Camara had nine points and 11 boards for Winston-Salem State.
Shepherd had a 34-25 lead at halftime.
Winston-Salem State rallied from a 12-point second half deficit to within four points at 54-50 after a free throw by Boykins with 3:21 left. Shepherd closed the game on a 9-2 run to secure the win.
Shepherd connected on 35.1 percent (20-57) of its field goals with a 31.8 percent (7-22) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 76.2 percent (16-21) of their free throws.
Winston-Salem State shot 38.9 percent (21-54) from the floor with a 22.2 percent (2-9) effort from beyond the arc. The Rams hit 61.5 percent (8-13) from the foul line.
Shepherd had a 42-28 edge in rebounds. Both teams had nine turnovers.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Bowie State for a 7 p.m. contest.
