BOWIE, Md. – Sophomore guard
Kara Wehner (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) scored a game-high 21 points to lead Shepherd University (1-0) to an 81-52 win over Shaw (0-1) in the season opener for both schools in women's basketball action at the Bowie State Tip-Off Classic on Saturday.
Wehner connected on 8-of-9 field goals with a 3-of-4 effort from three-point range. She was 2-of-3 from the line.
Sophomore forward
Lamaria Estridge (Walkersville, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) added 18 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore forward
Jenna Liska (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty/Frostburg State) added 12 points and 11 boards. Junior guard
Grace Middleton (Leesburg, Va./Tuscarora/Frostburg State) added nine points and tied Shaw's Leasia Matthews with a game-high five assists.
D'Ayzha Atkinson had 16 points and Matthews added 15 for the Bears.
Shepherd had a 48-27 lead at halftime.
Shepherd had a 42.9 percent (30-70) field goal percentage with a 28.6 percent (6-21) effort from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 60 percent (15-25) from the foul line.
Shaw connected on 26.2percent (16-61) of its field goals with 31.6 percent effort (6-19) from three-point range. The Bears hit 66.7 percent (14-21) of their free throws.
Shepherd had a 48-35 rebounding advantage. Shepherd forced 26 turnovers and committed 20.
The Rams return to action on Sunday when they face host Bowie State at 3 p.m.
