BOWIE, Md. – Malaka Cobb scored nine of her game-high 27 points in overtime to lead Bowie State (1-1) to an 82-72 win over Shepherd University (1-1) in women's basketball action at the Bowie State Tip-Off Classic on Sunday.
Shepherd was led by sophomore forward
Lamaria Estridge (Walkersville, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) and junior guard
Grace Middleton (Leesburg, Va./Tuscarora/Frostburg State).
Estridge scored 18 points as she connected on 6-of-15 field goals with a 1-of-1 effort from beyond the arc. She was 5-of-6 from the line. Middleton was 7-of-11 from the floor with a 1-of-2 effort from three-point range and a 2-of-3 effort from the charity stripe for 17 points. Estridge also grabbed six boards, while Middleton had five assists.
Junior forward
Jenna Liska (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty/Frostburg State) added 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Rams also got 13 points from junior guard
Kara Wehner (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) and a game-high six assists from sophomore guard
Trinity Turner (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg).
Afia Owusu-Mensah added 14 points and seven boards for the Bulldogs,
Shepherd had a 34-31 lead at halftime.
The game featured seven ties and seven lead changes.
Werner drained a three-pointer with 46 seconds left in regulation to force the extra session. Bowie State outscored Shepherd 16-6 in overtime to earn the win.
Shepherd had a 42.6 percent (26-61) field goal percentage with a 38.9 percent (6-21) effort from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 68.4 percent (13-19) from the foul line.
Bowie State connected on 40.8 percent (29-71) of its field goals with a 42.9 percent effort (6-14) from three-point range. The Bulldogs hit 72 percent (18-25) of their free throws.
Bowie State had a 40-31 rebounding advantage. Shepherd forced 22 turnovers and committed 27.
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Virginia Union at 1 p.m.
