SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Bruni Martinez had 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Virginia Union (2-1) to a 69-50 win over Shepherd University (1-2) in women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday
Junior guard
Kara Wehner (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) led the Rams with 18 points and four rebounds. She was 7-of-14 from the floor with a 2-of-7 effort from three-point range. She connected on 2-of-3 free throws.
Junior forward
Jenna Liska (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty/Frostburg State) added eight points and eight rebounds, while freshman forward
Summer Shackelford (Amissville, Va./Highland School) contributed six points and seven rebounds.
Maya Robinson added 13 points, eight assists, and six boards for the Panthers.
Virginia Union had a 27-24 lead at halftime.
The Panthers held a 49-46 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Virginia Union outscored Shepherd, 20-4, in the final stanza to pull away for the win.
Shepherd had a 32.7 percent (18-55) field goal percentage with a 19 percent (4-21) effort from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 58.8 percent (10-17) from the foul line.
Virginia Union connected on 40.6 percent (26-64) of its field goals with a 42.9 percent effort (6-14) from three-point range. The Panthers hit 61.1 percent (11-18) of their free throws.
Virginia Union had a 47-34 rebounding edge. Shepherd forced 16 turnovers and committed 22.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Point Park for a 2 p.m. contest.
