WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. –
Four players scored in double figures to lead #11 West Liberty (3-1) to an 89-81 win over to lead Shepherd University (3-1) in men's basketball action at West Liberty on Saturday.
Junior guard
Marcus Banks (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) scored a game-high 22 points for the Rams. Banks connected on 5-of-7 field goals with a 1-of-1 effort from beyond the arc. He was 11-of-12 from the foul line. Banks added six assists and four assists.
Sophomore guard
Elwyne Wordlaw (Frederick, Md./Frederick) added 20 points, while freshman guard
Colby White (Buckingham, Va./Blue Ridge) tossed in 17.
Sophomore forward
Favor Okigweh (Edgewood, Md./Parkville/The Winchedon School) had six points and nine boards. Sophomore forward
Daouda Traore (Silver Spring, Md./Clinton Grace Christian/St. Thomas Aquinas) contributed eight points and seven rebounds.
Jamie Muldowney, Cameron Williams, and Xavier Harris each scored 12 points to lead the Hilltoppers. Aiden Davis added 11 points.
West Liberty had a 38-35 advantage at halftime.
Shepherd rallied from a 15-point second half deficit to get to within three points at 74-71 after a jumper by freshman forward
Cole Hoffman (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) with 3:29 remaining, but would get no closer.
Shepherd connected on 42.9 percent (27-63) of its field goals with a 33.3 percent (7-21) performance from three-point range. The Rams drained 74.1 percent (20-27) of their free throws.
West Liberty shot 43 percent (34-79) from the floor with a 30.3 percent (10-33) effort from beyond the arc. The Hilltoppers hit 64.7 percent (11-17) from the foul line.
West Liberty had a 43-42 edge in rebounds. The Rams forced four turnovers and committed 12.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Frostburg State for a 2 p.m. game.
