MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Shepherd University (12-10, 0-2 PSAC East) dropped a pair of games to #20 Millersville (16-3, 2-0 PSAC East) in PSAC East doubleheader baseball action at Millersville on Friday. The Marauders posted a 5-2 win in game one and added an 11-2 victory in the nightcap.
The Rams took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when junior outfielder
Nik Rubendall (East Norriton, Pa/Pope John Paul II) led off with a single and redshirt senior infielder
Wyatt Miles (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove /Frederick CC) followed with a two-run blast.
Millersville tied the game in the second when Jimmy Kirk walked and Sammy Laux was hit-by-pitch. Kirk scored when Donis Rodriguez hit into a double play and Laux scored on a single by Matthew Williams.
Amani Jones hit a solo homer in the third to give the Marauders a 3-2 lead.
The Marauders added a pair of runs in the sixth as Jones hit an RBI-single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Williams.
Connor Blantz earned the win for Millersville (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 10 K, 1 BB) to improve to 3-0. Senior pitcher
Trevor Sharp (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) (5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K) (0-4) took the loss.
Millersville took an early lead in the first inning of the nightcap when Jeff Sabater drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a single by Sam Morris to make it 1-0.
In the second inning, the Marauders added a pair of runs. Sabater reached on a walk then stole second and scored on a single to center by Taylor. Williams followed with a two-run home run to up the lead to 4-0.
Williams opened in the fourth inning with a two-run homer to give Millersville a 6-0 lead.
Shepherd responded in the fifth with two runs. Redshirt sophomore outfielder
Ethan Jones (Oakton, Va./Oakton) led off the inning by being hit-by-pitch. Junior catcher
Austin Sofran (Swedesboro, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) followed with a double and Jones moved to third. Junior shortstop
Ethan Burgreen (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) hit a sacrifice fly to score Jones. Junior outfielder
Bodie Pullen (Winchester, Va./James Wood) then followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Sofran and cut the lead to 6-2.
Millersville added five runs in the fifth with a two-run single by Sabater and a two-run double by Bren Taylor highlighting the scoring.
Taylor went 3-for-3 to lead the Marauders.
Conor Cook (7.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 8 K, 2 BB) (4-1) picked up the win. Redshirt sophomore pitcher
Daniel Quintana (Haymarket, Va./Paul VI / James Madison) took the loss (3.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 K, 3 BB) (2-2).
The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Millersville for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
