Shepherd Softball Splits with Mansfield

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (11-11, 7-3 PSAC East) split with Mansfield (5-15, 3-9 PSAC East) in PSAC East softball doubleheader action at Sara Cree Field on Saturday. The Rams posted a 2-1 win in game one, while Mansfield recorded a 7-3 victory in the nightcap.
 
The Rams took a 2-0 lead in the third inning in game one. Sophomore catcher Madelyn Chambers (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) led off with a triple and scored on a single by sophomore pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington). Ruffner later scored on a single off the bat of freshman outfielder Haylee Hartman (Keedysville, Md./Boonsboro).
 
Mansfield plated a run in the fourth as Blackstone led off with a double and later scored on an error.
 
Sophomore first baseman Brenna Collis (Hedgesville, W.Va./Hedgesville) and Chambers each had a pair of hits for the Rams.
 
Ruffner (7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 15 K, 1 BB) (9-0) earned the win. A Putnam (6.0 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 5 K, 2 BB) (3-7) took the loss.
 
Sarah Shupp went 3-for-4, drove in three runs, and scored three to lead the Mountaineers in the nightcap win. Her three-run homer in the seventh sealed the win.
 
Senior third baseman Lauren Moore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora/Trevecca Nazarene) went 2-for 2 and Collis went 1-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs to pace the Rams.
 
Emma Maurer (7.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 7 K, 3 BB) (1-3) gained the win. Freshman pitcher Sam Colaw (Petersburg, W.Va./Petersburg) (6.2 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 4 K, 2 BB) (1-6) took the loss.
 
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they host Kutztown for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
