SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Shepherd University (18-17, 6-8 PSAC East) swept #10 West Chester (26-9, 8-6 PSAC East) in PSAC East doubleheader baseball action at Fairfax Field on Sunday. Shepherd recorded a 2-1 win in game one and added an 8-2 victory in the nightcap.
West Chester took a 1-0 lead in the second inning in game one on an RBI-single from Jake Welsch.
Shepherd tied the game in the second after junior shortstop
Ethan Burgreen (Winchester, Va./ Millbrook) singled then later scored when redshirt sophomore second baseman
Nathaniel Brookshire (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) grounded out.
Shepherd took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on an RBI-single from junior outfielder
Bodie Pullen (Winchester, Va./James Wood).
Burgreen led the Rams with a 2-for-3 effort and two runs scored.
Junior pitcher
Allen Miller (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon)(7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 K, 0 BB) (4-1) earned the win for the Rams. Kyle Lazer (5.2 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 8 K, 4 BB) (6-2) took the loss.
The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in the nightcap when Burgreen had an RBI-single.
Shepherd added a pair of runs in the third when junior outfielder
Nik Rubendall (East Norriton, Pa/Pope John Paul II) walked and Burgreen reached on a fielder's choice. They later scored on an error.
The Rams took an 8-0 lead in the fourth behind a three-run homer from redshirt senior infielder
Wyatt Miles (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove/Frederick CC) and a two-run blast from senior first baseman
Aidan Greaney (New Windsor, Md./ South Carroll/Frederick Community College).
West Chester scored a pair of runs in the seventh with an RBI-ground out from Darius Troche and a sacrifice fly from Mark Elliott.
Greaney and Pullen each went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.
Redshirt sophomore pitcher
Daniel Quintana (Haymarket, Va./Paul VI/James Madison) (5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 K, 2 BB) (5-2) earned the win. Julian Costa took the loss (3.2 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 6 K, 2 BB) (7-2).
The Rams return to action on Monday when they travel to West Chester for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
