Shepherd Men Top Kutztown; Banks Reaches 1,000-Point Mark

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Junior guard Marcus Banks (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) scored a game-high 25 points to lead Shepherd (10-8, 6-5 PSAC East)  to a 72-56 win over Kutztown (5-11, 2-9 PSAC East) in PSAC East men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday. Banks surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career. He currently has 1,021 career points.

Banks connected on 8-of-16 field goals with a 2-of-6 effort from three-point range. He sunk 7-of-8 free attempts. Banks added six rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals.

Sophomore forward Favor Okigweh (Edgewood, Md./Parkville/The Winchedon School) added 14 points and six rebounds, while sophomore guard Elwyne Wordlaw (Frederick, Md./Frederick) and freshman guard Colby White (Buckingham, Va./Blue Ridge) each tossed in 12 points.

Sophomore forward Daouda Traore (Silver Spring, Md./Clinton Grace Christian/St. Thomas Aquinas) tied Kutztown's Jordan Nkoa Abessolo for game-high rebounding honors with 11 boards. Junior forward Colton Hartman (St. Thomas, Pa./St. Maria Goretti) grabbed six boards.

Yahmir Satterfield scored 16 points to pace the Golden Bears. Nkoa Abessolo added 12 points, Jalen Bryant had 11, while Omari Banks tossed in 10.

Shepherd had a 34-28 lead at the break behind 12 first-half points from Banks.

The Rams led by as many as 13 points in the second half before Kutztown rallied late in the contest to within six points at 59-53 after a pair of free throws by Bryant with 3:38 left in regulation. Shepherd finished the game on a 13-3 run to secure the win.

Shepherd connected on 46.3 percent (25-54) of its field goals with a 31.8 percent (7-22) performance from three-point range for the game. The Rams drained 88.2 percent (15-17) of their free throws.

Kutztown shot 40.7 percent (22-54) from the floor with a 0 percent (0-10) effort from beyond the arc. The Golden Bears hit 52.2 percent (12-23) from the foul line.

Shepherd had a 39-31 advantage in rebounding. The Rams forced nine turnovers and committed 10.

The Rams are slated to return to action on Tuesday when they host Shippensburg for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
