Shepherd Women Knock Off Kutztown

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. –  Junior guard Kara Wehner (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) scored a game-high 24 points to lead Shepherd (4-12, 2-9) to a 66-63 victory over Kutztown (10-8, 6-5 ) in PSAC East women's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Saturday. 

Wehner connected on 8-of-18 shots from the floor with a 4-of-7 effort from beyond the arc. She was 4-of-4 from the foul line. Wehner added six steals, five assists, and four rebounds. Her 24 points tied a career-high effort, while her six steals established a new career mark.

Sophomore forward Lamaria Estridge (Walkersville, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) tossed in 22 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Freshman forward Vilte Kacerauskaite (Waldorf, Md./Saint Mary's) contributed seven points, a career-high five steals, and four rebounds. 

Leila Hurley added a team-high 20 points for the Golden Bears. Ariana Smuda had 12 points and nine rebounds. Danae Ellzy contributed 12 points and grabbed three boards.

The contest was close throughout most of the game with nine lead changes and eight ties. Shepherd took the lead for good at 60-59 after sophomore guard Trinity Turner (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) hit 1-of-2 free throws with 2:25 remaining. Shepherd closed the game on a 6-4 run to seal the upset victory.

Shepherd connected on 35.6 percent (21-59) of its field goals with a 42.1 percent effort (8-19) from three-point range. The Rams hit 64 percent (16-25) of their free throws.

Kutztown had a 42.6 percent (20-47) field goal percentage with a 39.1 percent (9-23) effort from beyond the arc for the game. The Golden Bears hit 63.6 percent (14-22) from the foul line. 

Shepherd had a 38-35 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced 22 turnovers and committed 16.

The Rams are slated to return to action on Tuesday when they host Shippensburg for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
