Shepherd Men Hold Off Millersville for Sixth Straight Win

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  Junior guard Marcus Banks (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) scored a game-high 22 points to lead Shepherd (15-8, 11-5 PSAC East) to a 65-61 win over Millersville (16-8, 11-6 PSAC East) in PSAC East men's basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday. Shepherd earned its sixth straight victory.

Banks connected on 6-of-10 field goals with a 10-of-11 effort from the foul line.

Freshman guard Colby White (Buckingham, Va./Blue Ridge) had 13 points and five rebounds, while sophomore forward Favor Okigweh (Edgewood, Md./Parkville/The Winchedon School) added 12 points and 17 rebounds. His 17 boards tied a career-high effort. Okigweh also tied Banks with a game-high three steals.

Day Waters led Millersville with 21 points. Dante Weise had 11 points, while  Eleazar Matthews-Spratley tossed in nine.
 
Shepherd had a 38-21 lead at halftime as Banks (12) and White (10) combined for 22 first-half points.
 
Millersville opened the second half on a 12-0 run to get to within five points at 38-33 with 16:09 left. Millersville held an eight-point lead at 55-47 with 5:08 left. Shepherd took the lead for good at 58-55 on a three-point play by Banks with 1:17 left. The Rams sunk 5-of-6 free throws in the game's final minute to seal the win.
 
Shepherd connected on 37.5 percent (21-56) of its field goals with a 19 percent (4-21) performance from three-point range for the game. The Rams drained 86.4 percent (19-22) of their free throws.
 
Millersville shot 39.7 percent (23-58) from the floor with a 35 percent (7-20) effort from beyond the arc. The Marauders hit 57.1 percent (8-14) from the foul line.

Millersville had a 38-37 edge in rebounding. The Rams forced 11 turnovers and committed eight.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to Mansfield for a 3 p.m. contest.
