Shepherd Women Fall to Kutztown in Overtime

KUTZTOWN, Pa. –  Madison Siggins scored a team-high 18 points to lead Kutztown (17-9, 13-6 PSAC East) to a 73-67 overtime victory over Shepherd (10-14, 8-11PSAC East) in PSAC East women's basketball action at Kutztown on Saturday. 

Junior guard Kara Wehner (Staten Island, N.Y./Xaverian) scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Rams. Wehner connected on 6-of-15 shots from the floor with a 3-of-9 effort from beyond the arc and went 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Wehner added seven rebounds. 

Freshman forward Summer Shackelford (Amissville, Va./Highland School) added 14 points, a game-high 12 rebounds, and three assists. Sophomore forward Lamaria Estridge (Walkersville, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) posted 11 points, 11 rebounds, and two assists. Sophomore guard Trinity Turner (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) had eight points and eight rebounds, while junior guard Cassidy Rhodes (Point of Rocks, Md./Brunswick) contributed eight points, a pair of assists, and two boards.

Jadyn Brenneman added 15 points for the Golden Bears. Danae Ellzy had 14 points, five rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals. Olivia Smelas contributed four points and a team-high seven rebounds. 

The game featured seven lead changes and 10 ties. Wehner hit a pair of free throws with 1:20 left in regulation before Smelas forced the extra session when she scored a layup with 49 seconds remaining. Kutztown outscored the Rams, 10-4, in overtime to gain the win.

Shepherd connected on 33.8 percent (23-68) of its field goals with a 20 percent effort (5-25) from three-point range. The Rams hit 72.7 percent (16-22) of their free throws.

Kutztown had a 40.6 percent (26-64) field goal percentage with a 20 percent effort (5-25) from beyond the arc for the game. The Golden Bears hit 69.6 percent (16-23) from the foul line. 

Shepherd had a 55-34 advantage on the boards. The Rams forced 15 turnovers and committed 25.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Shippensburg for a 6 p.m. contest.
