Ruffner Tosses One-Hitter; Shepherd Splits Softball Action at MEC Crossover

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SALEM, Va. – Shepherd University (4-6) split a pair of games in softball action at the MEC Crossover at Salem on Sunday. The Rams gained a 1-0 win over West Liberty (5-11) in the early game and dropped a 6-0 decision to Charleston in the later game.
 
Freshman infielder Hailey Putnam (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) led off the second inning in game one with a double. She moved to third on a sacrifice by junior pitcher Madelayne Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) and scored on a wild pitch.
 
Putnam went 2-for-3 to lead the Rams.
 
Ruffner (7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 10 K, 2 BB) (2-4) tossed a one-hitter to pick up the win. Annaliese Davis (6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 3 BB) (0-3) took the loss.
 
Charleston used a seven-hit attack to post a 6-0 win in the nightcap.
 
Clinging to a 2-0 lead, the Golden Eagles plated four runs on five hits in the fifth to secure the win.
 
Sophomore pitcher Sam Colaw (Petersburg, W.Va./Petersburg) went 3-for-3 to pace the Rams.
 
Kayla Moran went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI to lead Charleston.
 
Cali Masters gained the win for the Golden Eagles. Colaw took the loss.
 
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Slippery Rock for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
