Shepherd Baseball Splits with #30 Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. –  Shepherd University (16-12, 4-4 PSAC East) split with #30 Millersville (20-7, 5-3 PSAC East) in PSAC East baseball doubleheader action at Millersville on Saturday. The Rams gained a 9-7 triumph in game one and dropped a 7-0 decision in the nightcap.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener when redshirt junior outfielder Bodie Pullen (Winchester, Va./James Wood) walked, stole second, and reached third on an error. He scored when freshman infielder Evan Rosario (Lanham, Md./Jackson-Reed) reached on an error. 

Millersville tied the game 1-1 in the first when Donis Rodriguez reached on a hit-by-pitch and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Brady Ebbert.

The Rams took a 2-1 advantage in the second on a run-scoring single from Pullen. 

After the Marauders tied the game in the second, Jimmy Kirk hit a two-run homer in the third to give Millersville a 4-2 lead.

Shepherd rallied in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead on an RBI-double from freshman infielder Andrew O'Brien (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) and a two-run blast off the bat of Pullen. 

The Rams took a 9-4 lead with four runs in the fifth. The rally was highlighted by a two-run single by  O'Brien.

Millersville added a run on a solo homer in the fifth from Ebbert.

The Marauders added a pair of runs in the seventh on a two-run double from Sammy Laux.

Pullen went 2-for-3 with two runs and drove in three runs to pace the Rams.

Ebbert went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to pace the Marauders.

Senior pitcher Devin Mattei (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K) (2-1) earned the win. Matt Shamaqny (3.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) (3-2) took the loss.

Xavier Smith hit a solo homer in the second inning of the nightcap to give Millersville a 1-0 lead. 

The Marauders scored four runs in the third to take a 5-0 lead.  Chris Hunsicker hit a two-run single to key the rally.

Millersville scored two in the fifth behind RBI-singles from Laux and Hunsicker to cap the score at 7-0. 

Smith went 2-for-2 to pace the Marauders.

Rece Ritchey (5.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) (2-0) earned the win. Freshman pitcher Gavin Miller (Exeter Township, Pa./Exeter Township Senior)(4.0 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) (1-4) took the loss.

The Rams return to action Tuesday when they host Seton Hill for a single nine-inning game at 2 p.m.
